(About Department)

FOUNDATION
The history of the Tourism Management Department goes back to the School of Tourism and Hotel Management, which was founded in 2005. In accordance with the 2013/4459 numbered Council of Ministers Decision published in the Official Gazette dated April 25th 2013 and numbered 28628, the School was closed and converted to the Faculty of Tourism with the daytime and evening education programs. The department was formally established with the decision taken at the meeting of the Higher Education Executive Committee on 14th August, 2013 and started to admit students for the day-time and evening education programs in the 2013-2014 Academic Year.
 
AWARDED QUALIFICATIONS
Students who successfully complete all the courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS in total) in the program and achieve a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded an undergraduate diploma.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Admissions and registration to the faculty are regulated within the framework of Higher Education Law and rules. Students are admitted to the faculty according to the results of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) Basic Proficiency Test (TYT) and Field Proficiency Test (AYT), conducted by the Center for Evaluation, Selection and Placement (OSYM). The candidates who have received enough points from TYT and AYT for admission to the faculty are registered at the Registrar’s Office of the University on the dates determined by the Higher Education Council. Documents required for the registration are as follows:
1 - High school or an equivalent school diploma,
2 - Placement result document provided by OSYM.
 
RECOGNITION OF PREVIOUS LEARNING
Before a student enrolls in the faculty, the courses that were previously taken from an undergraduate or associate degree program of a Higher Education institution can be transferred to the department by the decision of the Faculty Administrative Board, and the student can be exempted from this course or courses. Furthermore, for the English courses that are included in the educational plan of the department, proficiency exams are held at the beginning of each academic term. Students who are successful in the exam are exempt from the relevant course in the curriculum. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree, students must successfully complete all of the compulsory and elective courses (240 ECTS in total) that they need to take in the program and their GPA must be at least 2.0 out of 4.00. In addition, in order to graduate from this department, students are required to do 90 work days of internship (workplace training) in tourism enterprises.
 
PROGRAM PROFILE
The aim of the program is to train qualified mid-level and senior manager candidates and tourism operators required by the tourism sector and tourism enterprises who are able to use information and communication technologies effectively, equipped with both theoretical and practical vocational education, know a second foreign language besides English, and possess a basic business management and tourism professional formation.  

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Students who successfully complete the department;
1. obtain knowledge about the structure, functioning and importance of the tourism sector in the development of the country,
2. obtain comprehensive and systematic knowledge about the concepts, theories, principles and facts in the field of tourism management and similar disciplines,
3.. demonstrate reading, comprehension, speaking and writing skills in English at least at C1 general level of European Language Portfolio,
4. demonstrate reading, comprehension, speaking and writing skills in a second foreign language at least at B2 general level of European Language Portfolio,
5.effectively communicate verbally, non-verbally and in writing, and show presentation skills,
6. describe, synthesize, analyze, interpret and evaluate information and data professionally,
7. use their knowledge in solving known and new problems,
8. know social and professional ethical values, evaluate them from a critical perspective and develop appropriate behavior,
9. use information and communication technologies and software regarding the industry at an advanced level,
10. obtain knowledge about basic concepts, theories, principles and facts in the field of business and economics,  
11. know and apply management theories and practices that can effectively manage tourism businesses (hotel businesses, travel businesses, food and beverage businesses, etc.),
12. know and apply national and international legal regulations and professional standards related to the field of tourism.
13. work effectively with others and independently,
14.continually improve themselves personally and professionally, take responsibility for self-learning and demonstrate this.
15.  take care of personal care, hygiene, clothing and appearance as required by the field of tourism management,
16. recognize, use and maintain the physical environment, equipment and technologies related to the service area,
17. recognize, understand and communicate with different cultures,
18. have knowledge of Atatürk's principles and reforms and adopt the fundamental values of the Republic,
19. possess detailed knowledge about the culture and geography of Turkey and the world,
20. know the processes of providing services in tourism enterprises and perform in a way to ensure guest satisfaction.
 
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AFTER GRADUATION
In accommodation establishments: they can find employment as hotel managers, front office managers, food and beverage department managers, bar managers, heads of restaurant, waiters/waitresses, heads of reception, receptionists, housekeeping managers, and heads of the floor. In food and beverage businesses, they can have the opportunity to work in positions such as restaurant managers, heads of restaurant, headwaiters/head-waitresses, barmen, and barmaids, etc. In travel agencies, they can have the opportunity to work in positions such as business managers, tour managers, information officers, etc. In gift shops, they can work in positions such as store managers, salespeople, etc. They can also have the opportunity to work as inspectors and in different positions at the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the job opportunities in public tourist facilities. There are also academic career opportunities for successful and apt students. Thanks to the training provided for the service industry, job opportunities such as managers in the service industry and bank clerks, etc. are also available. There is also a job opportunity for graduate students with master's degrees in Educational Sciences to be vocational course teachers in secondary educational institutions.

ADMISSION TO GRADUATE COURSES
Candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can study in graduate programs provided that they receive a valid grade from ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam) and have sufficient English language knowledge.
